One of my more recent distractions has been the show Underground. It is a great show with a good message. I like shows that I can attract a deeper meaning from. The show has much parallel with current day mentalities.
Minty is Harriet Tubman’s nickname on the show. In one of the episodes in season 2 during a speech she gives to supporters of the cause; she shares her story of how she persevered to freedom. In her speech she said whatever freedom we want, we have to look through/past our current situation to keep our eyes on what we seek. She admits that it will be difficult but it is a necessity. She continues to say that she may not have known what freedom looked like or felt like but she knew her current situation was not right for her. During present time with technology we have the ability to see others where we wish to be and to use them as our north star. The freedom that Harriet and others was seeking during her time could only be imagined.
Like her and many of us, we are raised according to someone else’s beliefs. Once we reach the age of understanding we choose to change or not to change due to exposure or understanding. Regardless of what it is, we know that there is something more and bigger we are meant for individually. But having the desire and the sight to see past our current reality, which for Harriet Tubman had been years and generations of slavery, can be hard. She went on to say how her first mistake was convincing her brothers to run with her. She said that was her first mistake because they did not share her vision. When it got hard only a mile away from the plantation their beliefs caused them to fight and slow her down. Eventually, her brother’s belief that the run to freedom was impossible, grew so strong that it overpowered her vision and they eventually dragged her back to the plantation.
We as individuals aren’t running to our freedom today. Freedom in current day context is not the same freedom that our ancestors was seeking. However, we all have our version of freedom. Everyday we take actions to maintain or seek our internal belief of freedom. We go to work for our piece of freedom and what that means to us. It’s wrong of me and anyone else to define what freedom is to a person. During our journey to our personal freedom how do we prevent from being complacent and comfortable? Or like Harriet, being pulled back by someone else’s belief of freedom and comfort.
Being comfortable is the demise to most people going after their dreams. Even myself have gotten comfortable. Being able to pay bills, drive a nice car, sleep in a comfortable bed with the cool air blowing is enough for right now. But I know it will not be enough for very long especially once we start building a family.
The question that I constantly ask is how do I keep my fire burning to want more, to do more, and to be more? There are people that would say, be grateful for what I have and my current position in life. That the pressure I place upon myself is unrealistic and unfair. I don’t disagree with them, but then I ask myself if I do not place the pressure on myself then who will? Pressure and pushing myself is what caused me to write this post. I had to put enough pressure on myself to pull myself out of my comfort zone not to only write this but to then share it. As I mentioned I don’t disagree that too much pressure can be harmful. It it can either compel you to action or inaction. The delicate balance must be decided individually, not for you.
